THOMAS A FOLEY: I represent many students from the University of Delaware and some of the local community colleges here in Wilmington as well as a number of kids that are actually in high school. It's not uncommon for young people to find themselves in trouble with the law regarding underage possession or consumption of alcohol, possession of illegal drugs, driving under the influence, shoplifting, assault, disorderly conduct, misdemeanor type of offenses.

When a young person or student comes in my office and they've been charged with a quote-unquote crime, it's very frightening to them because they feel that their entire future is about to unravel. And I quickly settle them down and make clear to them that they're going to land on their feet, and they're going to get their life back. Good kids make mistakes. And the point that I always drive home to a prosecutor is that we can't let one bad day or one bad decision define his or her life.
